TBE (Tris-Borate-EDTA) has a liquid concentrate of 10X, where 1X contains 0.089M Tris, 0.089M Borate, and 0.002M EDTA. 1L of concentrate makes 10L of 1X buffer. Tris solutions are effective buffers for slightly basic conditions. Borate, a derivative of boric acid, is a weak proton donor but a Lewis acid that can accept an electron pair. EDTA is a chelator of divalent cations, mainly Mg2+. TBE is most commonly used for nucleic acid electrophoresis.
