Description

Acetate buffer has a pH value of 3.5 and is made from a mixture of acetic acid (weak acid) and acetate ions (conjugated base). Acetate buffer is routinely used in DNA and RNA precipitation, and in the preparation of gel stains for protein gel electrophoresis. Experiments have shown that when added to food waste composting systems, sodium acetate may be effective at counteracting the adverse effects of organic acids produced in the composting process. Acetate buffer has a pKa value of 4.76 and a melting point of 323-329°C.
