Description

The citrate buffer is composed of Citric acid monohydrate (C6H8O7 • H2O, MW 210.14) and Trisodium citrate dihydrate (C6H5O7Na3 • 2H2O, MW 294.12) mixed in a fixed ratio to attain the desired pH. As a conjugate base of a weak acid, citrate can perform as a buffering agent or acidity regulator, resisting changes in pH. May be used for antigen retrieval of tissue samples. The citrate solution is designed to break protein cross-links; thus, unmasking antigens and epitopes in formalin-fixed and paraffin embedded tissue sections, resulting in enhancing staining intensity of antibodies. Citrate has anticoagulant activity as a calcium chelator.
