Description

Urea 8.0M, Sterile is widely used for sample preparation prior to electrophoretic methods such as isoelectric focusing (IEF), SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), and two-dimensional electrophoresis (2DE). Urea is a chaotropic agent that is useful for the solubilization and denaturization of proteins. Urea is commonly used for sample preparation prior to electrophoretic methods or to facilitate enzymatic digestion of proteins for mass spectrometric analysis. Urea will break down to form isocyante in the presence of heat (greater than 30 C). This may lead to carbamylation of proteins where the amino terminus will react with the isocyanate. Generally isocyanate is reactive toward amine groups.
