Description

Potassium acetate is a 1M aqueous solution that has a density of 1.57 g/cm3 and a melting point of 292°C. It has a pH value of 7.4 and is ACS grade. It is an osmotic agent that is prepared by the reaction between acetic acid and potassium hydroxide. It has potential to substitute to calcium chloride for osmotic distillation. It can perform surface modification by intercalating with hydroxyl groups on the kaolinite surface. It can act as a catalyst to accelerate the acetylation of wood at low temperature.

In molecular biology, potassium acetate is used to precipitate dodecyl sulfate (DS) and DS-bound proteins, allowing the removal of proteins from DNA. It is also used as a salt for the ethanol precipitation of DNA. Potassium acetate is used in mixtures applied for tissue preservation, fixation, and mummification.
