Description

BCYE (Buffered Charcoal Yeast Extract) Agar is used in the primary isolation of Legionella. Legionella is a gram-negative bacteria of interest for its pathogenic characteristics.

BCYE Agar is produced using only Microbiology Grade raw materials. The Activated Charcoal dissolves Hydrogen peroxide produced by the bacteria, while alpha-Ketoglutarate contributes to the stimulation of oxygen-scavenging enzymes. Dissolve in distilled water at 100°C before autoclaving or sterile-filtering. This medium may be supplemented with 400 mg/L of L-Cysteine HCl and 250 mg/L of Ferric pyrophosphate as desired.
